Zakuska is a Seattle-based ensemble formed in 2010 that has become a beloved fixture of the Pacific Northwest Balkan folk scene. The band’s name—meaning “snack” or a shared spread of small dishes in several Slavic languages—reflects their welcoming approach to music meant for both dancing and listening. Specializing in multipart vocal harmonies, their extensive repertory spans Southeastern Europe, including traditions from Bulgaria, Macedonia, Greece, Romania, and beyond.
As regular favorites at the Lyrids Folk Dance Festival, the group has been featured as the Saturday night dance band and has led singing workshops and singalongs. With all members being experienced folk dancers for over 18 years, Zakuska brings a deep, experiential understanding of movement to their performances, ensuring their music remains connected to the traditions and communities they serve.
